Phone Line
Quality
Signal Strength
Cap - Due to a speed limit set by the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC), you will be unable to get 56 Kbps throughput
with a 56 Kbps modem. The FCC limits the amount of power that phone
companies can use to send signals over the network. This cap on
signal strength limits data throughput to a maximum of 53 Kbps
regardless of what your modem can actually deliver.
Telephone
Lines and Switching - If a local call to your ISP gets routed
partially through analog switches, you will lose 56 Kbps capability.
The telephone company may be able to tell you which type of switches
the call is being routed through on the way to the ISP. Our local
phone company routes much of our service through switches that
reduces our bandwdth. Connection speeds change from neighborhood
to neighborhood, and also affects the connection from west to the
east sides of the lake. Currently that connection is via an underground
cable that passes under the lake.
Line Noise -
Anything that adds noise to your telephone line or causes an analog
to digital conversion between your ISP and your modem lessens the
transmissions performance. The local telephone company for Wonder
Lake only guarantees 300 baud connectivity in our area.
Be alert for sounds of static and interruption on your phone line. Report
any trouble to your locall telephone company. Difficult problems may take
repeated requests for repair.
Be aware that your local phone company will credit you $25.00 for problems
not solved in the time frame quoted to you.
Document if your problem occures during heavy winds, or rain. Build up of
ice and snow can also affect service. A
common problem in our area is squirrel chew. Animals can damage the lines,
and excessive movement due to weather will cause interrupttions, static,
and disconnections as the breaks in the lines are shifting, or becoming wet.
If you are adding extensions in your home, use quality shielded wire for your
installation. Signs of poor quality wiring is humming or bleed over in your
phone line. If you doubt the quality of your line. Run an extension wire
from your box outside & test your connection again. If your service is
improved, consider installing new phone wire in your home.
